just kidding it's totally fine if someone doesn't like it tho

I kinda phrased it wrong, I more or less meant a situation like Smuggers list where some fans feel the need to add it to the S tier solely because they feel they have to for different reasons besides them actually liking it themselves.

I'll probably make my own tier eventually, but for now I'm just here to say that this is a much, much more visually interesting (and therefore engaging) way to do a 'rank the movies' thread than just going with standard text. Some of this might actually stick in my mind for a while.

Also, this thread has unexpectedly made me a huge fan of that Son of Godzilla poster everyone's using. The Kamacuras and Kumonga look like serious threats, surrounding Godzilla and Minya like they are, and the orange atomic ray and smoke rings combined with the orange of the Kamacuras' eyes really makes the whole image stand out visually. That is a very cool poster.

I have been meaning to post by ranking of Godzilla films for a while now. I watched all of the films to prep for KOTM and I kept track of the pecking order as I watched every film. This list is in order from best to worst and is a combination of both critical and personal opinion. I am more than happy to discuss my rankings.

Top 5:

Gojira
Destroy All Monsters
Ghidorah: The Three Headed Monster
GMK
King Kong vs. Godzilla

Excellent:

The Return of Godzilla
Terror of Mechagodzilla
Invasion of Astro-Monster
Godzilla vs. Destoroyah
KOTM
Shin Godzilla

Very Good:

Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah
Mothra vs. Godzilla
Godzilla vs. Biollante
Godzilla Final Wars
Godzilla vs. Spacegodzilla
Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla

Good:

Godzilla vs. Mothra
Godzilla 2014
Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla
Godzilla 2000
Godzilla vs. Hedorah
Godzilla Raids Again

Fair:

Godzilla Tokyo SOS
Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II
Godzilla vs. Gigan
Son of Godzilla
Godzilla: The Planet Eater

Once in a While:

Ebirah: Horror of the Deep
Godzilla vs. Megalon
Godzilla 1998
Godzilla: Planet of Monsters

Rock Bottom:

Godzilla's Revenge
Godzilla vs. Megaguirus
Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle

All entries are judge based on my favorite version of the film. For example, the first movie is judged based on the 54 original, my preferred version of the film and not some aggregate determination based on all versions I've seen.

My Favorite (S) = Gojira

Top 5 after My Favorite (A+) = Godzilla Vs. Destroyah, Mothra Vs. Godzilla (64), Godzilla Vs. King Ghidorah, Destroy All Monsters, Terror of Mechagodzilla

The Greats (A/A-) = Godzilla Vs. Biollante, Shin Godzilla, Ghidorah the Three Headed Monster

The Almost Greats (B+) = GMK: Giant Monsters All Out Attack, Godzilla Vs. Hedorah, Godzilla Vs. Mechagodzilla (93), Godzilla: King of the Monsters (MV)

The Really Goods (B/B-) = Godzilla Vs. Mechagodzilla (74), Godzilla (MV), Godzilla Vs. Monster Zero, Godzilla: Tokyo SOS, Godzilla 2000, Son of Godzilla

The Okays (C+/C) = King Kong Vs. Godzilla, The Return of Godzilla, Godzilla: Final Wars, Godzilla Vs. Gigan, Godzilla Vs. The Sea Monster

The Heavily Flawed (C-/D+/D/D-) = Godzilla Vs. Spacegodzilla, Godzilla: The Planet Eater, Godzilla X Megaguirus, Godzilla: Planet of Monsters, Godzilla Vs. Mothra (92), Godzilla X Mechagodzilla (02), Godzilla Raids Again

Bottom 3 (F) = Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle, Godzilla Vs. Megalon, Godzilla's Revenge

Doesn't Count (N/A) = Godzilla (Tristar)

Preferred version of each film:
Gojira (1954) = Japanese original
Godzilla Raids Again (1955) = Japanese original is technically better, but US edit is more memorable (i.e. so bad its hilarious)
King Kong Vs. Godzilla (1962) = Japanese original
Mothra Vs. Godzilla (1964) = US Edit
Ghidorah the Three Headed Monster (1964) = No strong preference
Godzilla Vs. Monster Zero (1965) = US dub
Godzilla Vs. The Sea Monster (1966) = Japanese original or original US dub
Son of Godzilla (1967) = Japanese original or original US dub
Destroy All Monsters (1968) = Japanese original
Godzilla's Revenge (1969) = US dub
Godzilla Vs. Hedorah (1971) = Original US dub
Godzilla Vs. Gigan (1972) = No strong preference
Godzilla Vs. Megalon (1973) = MST3K episode
Godzilla Vs. Mechagodzilla (1974) = No strong preference
Terror of Mechagodzilla (1975) = Japanese original or US dub TV version
Return of Godzilla (1984) = Japanese original (though I do really like Raymond Burr in the US edit)
Godzilla Vs. Biollante (1989) = Japanese original
Godzilla Vs. King Ghidorah (1991) = Japanese original
Godzilla Vs. Mothra (1992) = Japanese original
Godzilla Vs. Mechagodzilla (1993) = Japanese original
Godzilla Vs. Spacegodzilla (1994) = Japanese original
Godzilla Vs. Destroyah (1995) = Japanese original
Godzilla 2000 (1999) = US edit
Godzilla X Megaguirus (2000) = Japanese original
Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All Out Attack (2001) = Japanese original
Godzilla X Mechagodzilla (2002) = Japanese original
Godzilla: Tokyo SOS (2003) = Japanese original
Godzilla: Final Wars (2004) = No strong preference
Godzilla (2014) = US original
Shin Godzilla (2016) = Japanese original
Godzilla: Planet of Monsters (2017) = No strong preference
Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle (2018) = No strong preference
Godzilla: The Planet Eater (2018) = No strong preference
Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) = US original

Coincidentally did one of these before and after KOTM.

S: Gojira, Mothra vs Godzilla, Terror of Mechagodzilla, vs King Ghidorah, 2000, GMK and Shin

A: GTTHM, Monster Zero, Ebirah, Son, DAM, Hedorah, Biollante, 2014

B: King Kong vs Godzilla, vs Gigan, vs Mechagodzilla, 84, vs Destroyah, Against Mechagodzilla, COTEOB, and KOTM

C: Raids Again, Revenge, vs Megalon, vs MG 2, vs Spacegodzilla, vs Megaguirus, Final Wars, Planet Eater

D: vs Mothra, Tokyo S.O.S POTM

E: 1998

No Fs because I can't hate any Godzilla movie even that one.

Also haven't seen Mechagodzilla 74 or Megon but fairly confident my placement won't move

redoing this because I've seen all the films now.

Personally, GVD is a low B tier, probably even C, but it's good points are so good I bumped it up.

Tiermaker doesn't let other people see lists with links,it just links back to the normal list for someone to make their own. You have to manually save and download the photo.

This is my personal list generally based on enjoyment. Have to rewatch a couple so this may or may not change much. Also I haven't seen the anime films yet.

Oh poop, another dude who puts TOMG in S tier and doesn't dump Revenge automatically?

Always nice to find a fellow man of culture ;)

Well, this one stands out. The top two tiers are unremarkable outside of the inclusion of TPE, but then you've got GvSG in the third tier while GvMGII and GvD are below GINO... That's a little bit of a head-scratcher. I can understand putting the latter two at the bottom, but what gives the famously shoddy SG a pass?
