A well-known art thiefreposter in the Godzilla community on Deviantart is trying to say that Toho stole their GyuraGoji design from Transapient. They did not.

Who exactly is this art thief? And yeah, it's pretty ironic an art thief is claiming Toho stole someone's design.

I dont know if this is the appropriate place to post this. Some of the comments on this video didn't have me cringing but did leave me scratching my head. I disagree on the exact ranking of some of the Ghidorahs in the video but the comments are a trip.

Showa Ghidorah being small star level, Heisei Ghidorah scaling to Heisei Godzilla who is Black Hole level because of Spacegodzilla, and GMK Mothra shining with the power of the sun, to name a few.

This annoys me, too, primarily because the way most fans pronounce it (like Maria Pitillo in GINO) is wrong. I think it's also kinda dumb that the 1954 film has become "Gojira" in the West.

One thing a lot of Godzilla fans do which the English Google voice doesn't is put the emphasis on the second syllable (as we do in "godZILla"). There's no such emphasis in the Japanese pronunciation.

The main differences are caused by the "r", which is a totally different consonant in Japanese than in English. Not only that, but English allows for consonants modifying preceding vowels (in this case the "r" modifies the "i" to give us something like "jeer"), which you don't really have in Japanese. In this case, both pronunciations have three syllables, but the Japanese ゴジラ has the third syllable begin with the consonant we render as "r" while the English pronunciation typically has a third syllable consisting only of the vowel "a". (Hopefully I made that distinction clear. Another way of looking at it: ゴジラ is consonant-vowel, consonant-vowel, consonant-vowel; "Gojira" is consonant-vowel, consonant-vowel-consonant, vowel.)

Maybe the differences sound subtle to most, idk. I've studied Japanese, however, and the "standard" American pronunciation of "Gojira" makes me cringe. And I understand that most Anglophones shouldn't be expected to know, understand, and reproduce every Japanese sound correctly, but IMO it kinda defeats the purpose of using a foreign word for distinction if you're just gonna Anglicize that word anyway.

The "English accent" pronunciation of Gojira is close enough that I don't see why it's really worth making a fuss about. That's like cringing at an foreigner's accent when they speak English as a secondary language.

A new speaker is not going to pronounce things as perfectly as a native speaker and it's silly (and cringey, IMO, if we're going by this thread) to expect them to.
