Monsters Intelligence

Post by Celestia Ludenberg »

This is something that I've been thinking about and has probably been brought up before.

In the Showa movies Godzilla acts like he's able to think like we do, he displays some very human characteristics as well as personality.
In the Heisei films he's shown to be more animal like acting like a wild animal just destroying buildings other than for the sake of destroying them when he fights other monsters it's most likely because they're invading his territory.

This can apply to all the other monsters too, in the Showa era they appear to be intelligent and can probably think like we do.
Are there any comic books or books in general that show off any of the Toho monsters intelligence rather than them portrayed as animals acting on instinct?

The Showaverse pretty much shows that the monsters all have human like personalities and thought processes (think like the animals in lion kong) even if they didn't really elaborate on it throughout the series. The heisei series Godzilla shows signs of being a highly intelligent animal like an elephant or a dolphin. Mothra and Battra seem to be even smarter with human level intelligence (or at least high level thinking). The Marvel Godzilla comic is a good way to see Godzillas intelligence and some of his character development.

The Dark Horse Color Special had a very brutal and animalistic Godzilla, but he portrayed some smarts when facing his golem foe, Gekido-Jin. When Gekido-Jin is destroyed and reduced to rubble, he will rebuild himself and grow in size. Godzilla noticed this, and started blasting Gekido-Jin every time he attempted to rebuild to prevent him from growing bigger.

For something a little more recent, IDW's Godzilla: Rulers of Earth Godzilla is a very smart one. Just a quick example, in his battle against Zilla, he uses Zilla's own tunnels against him to sneak attack him. Godzilla's definitely not the only monster in that series that portrays some intelligence, either... Honorable mentions to the Gargantuas and how they handle their battle against the Big G.

In 2000 theres a shot of him looking at Orgas opening mouth then chargers right in, I figured the shot of him looking on was that of him putting it together in his head of what to do.
Few minutes later when he kills Katagiri it seemed like he knew who he was, perhaps remembering that Katagiri tried to kill him multiple times

I would very much like to see Gorgo Yongary and Pulgasari: Giant Monsters all out attack
