I've never seen the original 54 film, only it's dub counterpart. It wasn't until not too long ago when I realized that King of the Monsters and Gojira were pretty much two different films. At that same time, I had heard about the Criterion release. So instead of renting the original release, I'll pick up the Blu-Ray later this year.

I'd give KotM a solid "A" if I felt like ranking it on its own. The pacing is very well done, I like the noir-ish structure and narration, and I love...love...Raymond Burr's performance.

"This is it George...Steve Martin signing off from Tokyo, Japan."

The terror in his face as he peers up at Godzilla in that moment is absolutely palpable. Compare it too the screaming and gnashing of teeth typical of so many performers in horror films, and it seems incredibly genuine in comparison.

However, it goes without saying that too much of the original was trimmed out. I watch both versions regularly, and I simply consider KotM to be a loose "companion film" to Godzilla '54. Sort of a "Meanwhile, across town, Mr. Martin was..." kind of side-story.
