Which Directors, Actors, and Such Are Fans?

Which Directors, Actors, and Such Are Fans?

Post by Llante »

So, I was curious as to which Hollywood directors, actors, and the such are fans of Godzilla.

There's a lot of Godzilla fandom in the hip hop world.
Tokyo, a smoldering memorial to the unknown, an unknown which at this very moment still prevails and could at any time lash out with its terrible destruction anywhere else in the world.

Martin Scorsese is a big fan. When he played Van Gogh in Kurosawa's dreams he brung over Ishiro Honda (who was Kurosawa's right hand man in his last batch of films) and told him how much he enjoyed watching his movies as a kid. I read somewhere Scorsese even preserved Mothra VS Godzilla and a few others in some film history museum in New York.

Other fans include

Matt Groening
George Lucas
Conan O'Brien
Paul Ruebens (AKA Pee-Wee Herman)
George Romero (yep!)
Patton Oswalt

I might be forgetting some but those are some of the names that havent been listed yet

Hmmm, a lot of my favorite directors seem to like Godzilla. I never knew this until I read this thread.

Very interesting thread. It would be good if proof or links to proof are displayed for accuracy's sake. Just a suggestion. The few I'd heard of have already been mentioned.

I did some checkup to see if I could find any references for the people already mentioned. This is what I could find:

Will Smith - this thread at Henshin Justice Unlimited discusses Smith talking about Ultraman on Jay Leno's show back in 2005. There used to be a YouTube link, but it's gone now. :(

John Carpenter - his IMDB page states that he "is an avid fan of the Godzilla films," and "considers the first Godzilla movie (Gojira) to be an inspiration for him."
In this "Exclusive Interview", Carpenter is briefly asked if he would ever consider doing a giant monster movie, and he replies that he would "love to do a Godzilla film."
This video interview doesn't bring up Godzilla, but in the background you can see that Carpenter has a big Heisei Godzilla figure on his desk.

Steven Spielberg's IMDB page has a quote by him: "Godzilla (Godzilla, King of the Monsters! (1956)) was the most masterful of all dinosaur movies because it made you believe it was really happening."

That's all I could find.

Nice work. At some point when I have time I'll see what I can dig up myself.

^ Well, considering he did the GOD WARRIOR short with Shinji Higuchi not too long ago, that's not a surprise. It's still great to hear, though.

I would love to see Anno - or Hayao Miyasaki, even - tackle a full length giant monster film, live-action or animated.

Well, Evangelion is pretty close to a kaiju anime if you ask me. Didn't Anno contribute to an Ultraman anime at one point?

I can't believe ''Mark Hamill'' is a fan of Godzilla... any proof to this? An '' Patton Oswalt''??? Where'd you get that?

Yes, it is; but I would like something a little more straightforward in its monster formula. The angels don't always seem as integral to the story as they should.

Brad Pitt liked War of the Gargantuas. Or at least it inspired him in someway.
