If a Godzilla film were made by a non-Japanese director...

If a Godzilla film were made by a non-Japanese director...

Postby Connor » Thu Dec 20, 2012 8:02 am

Who would your choices be? Despite what this thread title would lead you to believe, this doesn't really have anything to do with the upcoming Legendary Pictures film. This is strictly wish-fulfillment.

Sam Peckinpah- Dead, sadly, but would have been wild. Overcranking, squibs, and split-second cuts for the win! 8-)
John Frankenheimer- Another dead guy; I feel that Frankenheimer would've brought to the Godzilla films a much-needed sociopolitical realism, like what was seen in The Return of Godzilla. I'm a huge fan of Frankenheimer, and I was surprised to learn that he made a monster movie called Prophecy in the late 70s (not to be confused with the Christopher Walken movie).
Stanley Kubrick- Good God, YES.
Paul Verhoeven- Paul's dark satire in RoboCop + Godzilla = A hoot.
Either Ridley or Tony Scott.
William Friedkin- I love the movie To Live and Die in L.A., as well as The Exorcist and The French Connection. Gritty, cynical, scary, and tough, like a Godzilla film should be.
Michael Mann- You're all probably familiar with the shootout scene from his film, Heat, and the infamous briefcase scene from Collateral. One wonders how he would direct a kaiju-fighting scene. ;)

I disagree with JJ ABRAMS I can't stand any of his films, it would be horrible if he got his hands on Goji.

I liked Super 8 and I am a big Star Trek fan so I also liked what he did with that franchise (the next movie that is coming out looks real good). My only fear with him doing a Godzilla movie would be that he wouldn't show Godzilla enough.

By the way, I LOVE your avatar. What is it of?

I would like that. I tried to look it up on Netflix and they don't have it.

Even though he has admitted previous times he HATES Godzilla, Peter Jackson would have been the obvious choice. With that said, my choices would be Spielberg (who has said he is a big Godzilla fan), Joss Whedon or Christopher Nolan.

Stephen Spielberg. He LOVES Godzilla. Why do you think he made Jurassic Park? The dinosaurs were tributes to Godzilla in a way, especially the T-Rex.

Someone like Guillermo Del Toro would be the perfect director of a Godzilla movie. If they wanted to bring other Kaiju into the mix, He's the only director today who could make a place like Monster Island believable. The closest we are getting is Pacific Rim.

Why not go with Genndy Tartakovsky? Let's look at the guy shall we? He has directed T.V. shows with giant robots and monsters such as Symbionic Titan, an episode of Samurai Jack, Powerpuff Girls (remember Dynamo and the giant monsters that would constantly declare war on Townsville?) and Dexter's Laboratory which even had an episode involving a giant monster brawl between DeeDee and Dexter in the tradition of classic Kaiju films and another which both made fun of, while at the same time paying tribute to, the Sentai shows such as Power Rangers and Big Bad BeetleBorgs as well as Macross and Kaiju films. Hell, it even took place in JAPAN! All of those shows have exquisite and dynamic action sequences. Not to mention the majority of Symbionic Titan during its one season run (CURSE YOU, CARTOON NETWORK!) had the titular character going toe-to-toe with alien beasties that might as well have been Kaiju. In my belief, Mr. Tartakovsky would be great as a non-Japanese director for Godzilla, I would be satisfied if it were animated as well.

Steven Spielberg would be my first choice. He's a big Godzilla fan. And War of the Worlds shows he could pull it off..

You know those beautiful shots of tripods approaching in the distance at night? Imagine that with Godzilla..

And he made schindler's list. He would stay true to what Godzilla represents!

Del Toro, Zack Snyder, and J. J. Abrams would be cool too.
