"Ultimate" versions of Kaiju

Postby MaxRebo320 » Thu Jun 21, 2012 7:31 am

I am just curious to know what design you consider the ''ultimate design'' of Toho monsters. The ones that you think of when you here that character's name. For me, they are:

Godzilla: 1991 Godzilla
Mothra: 2003 Mothra
Rodan: 1993 Rodan
King Ghidorah: 1998 Grand King Ghidorah
Mechagodzilla: Showa Mechagodzilla
Anguirus: 1968 Anguirus
Gigan: 2004 Gigan

Godzilla has a regen like Wolverine, a skin like Luke Cage, a hero aura like Captain America, a strength like Hulk, an unstoppability like Juggernaut, an immortality like Deadpool.

There's a 'God' in Godzilla for a reason...

I'm offended by the very notion of this thread.

If we are talking about "Ultimate", as in, an incarnation that perfectly embodies that particular character, then the answer is a resounding "no". All these characters are just a set of ideas and features that should be tweaked and modified to fit the particular tone and artistic direction of their film in question.

I love the FW Gigan design, but I love it in the context of Final Wars it doesn't work in any other media that Gigan has appeared in. I love the '74 Godzilla suit, but it only works in the context of the films it appeared in. etc. etc. etc.

If this thread is just favorites, then that is just an entirely different can of worms.

On the whole, I agree with TokyoVigilante. There is no 'ultimate' version of a kaiju, and the fact that there are so many different variations for the different movies is part of the characters' appeal. That said, my current favorite versions are:

Godzilla: '62 (Showa); '89 (Heisei); '99 (Millenium). I can't just pick one Godzilla.

Mothra: '64, probably, though there are elements to like and dislike about each version of Mothra. My 'ultimate' version would combine characteristics from several of them.

Rodan: '54. I wish his later Showa suits could've looked that awesome.

King Ghidorah: '64.

Mechagodzilla: '75. It took the already great '74 design but added better missiles and the laser cannon underneath the head. Cool stuff.

Gigan: '72. '04 tried too hard to be badass; I prefer the more cartoonish simplicity of the original.

Anguirus: '68. Didn't care too much for the original or FW suits.

The only monster, and design for that monster, that I think is truly perfected, would be 2003 Mothra.

Godzilla: Either 1964 or 1984 (if the eyes wernt so derpy looking)

Anguirus: 1968

Rodan: 1993

King Ghidorah: 1991

Baragon: 1965

Gigan: I REALLY like the 2004 design, but he sucks compaired to Showa Gigan, so 1972 it is.

Mechagodzilla: Hrm. This is a tough one. Heisei MG is my favorite, but so is Kiryu. Gonna have to abstain here

Godzilla: From Spacegodzilla
Mothra: Orginal
Anguirus: Destroy all Monsters
Gigan: Classic. (Whole reason I posted was to say this)
Mechagodzilla: Three way tie, though the classic version is just more...menacing. (It's been said a hundred times, but that's because it's true)

All weapons/vehicles/aliens look better in the old days too.
Before it can be filmed, drawn, acted or programed, it must be written.

Godzilla: Heisei Era.
Anguirus: Showa Era. The Final Wars one looked a little thin around the head, though his bouncing ball technique could be useful.
Mothra: Tokyo SOS. I know beam spam is a bit contentious in this forum, but I wouldn't mind the return of of her Battle For Earth powers.
Rodan: Final Wars version, but with Showa heat beam.
Baragon: GMK version.
King Ghidorah: Hmm...the GMK version has a reworking of the classic roar, but I would like some fusion of the 1991 film and ROM 3.
Gigan: Showa version.
Minya: Showa version, the Final Wars one looked a bit plastic. Though I wouldn't mind if he's given reptilian eyes like Junior.
Kamacuras: Don't mind either, but lean toward the Final Wars version. Wouldn't mind if he got invisibility powers as well.
Manda: Showa version. Final Wars version too green, IMHO.
Kumonga: Either's fine, they pretty much look the same to me.
King Caesar/Shiisa/Seesar/etc.: Showa version. Like the glowing eyes more.
Can't recall anyone else who appeared in later eras. The Heisei and Millenium Kaiju are fine the way they are, IMO.

Going by the OP "when I hear the name, which do I think of" versions:
                  Godzilla: 90s
                  Mothra: 1992
                  King Ghidorah: 1964
                  Anguirus: 1968
                  MechaGodzilla: 1974
                  Rodan: 1956

But going by the "favourite" version some people are posting by:
                  Godzilla: 2001 (GMK)
                  Mothra: 1961 and Eternal Mothra
                  King Ghidorah: Death Ghidorah
                  Anguirus: 1955
                  MechaGodzilla: 1974
                  Rodan: Fire Rodan
