Godzilla's Most Formidable Foe?

I just finished vs MechaGodzilla (the original) for the first time in a while and it occurred to me how much of a beast the original MechaG was.

Let's look at the facts -

He beats down Anguirus and breaks his jaw.
He whoops up on Godzilla and makes him disappear for a majority of the movie.
He lays the smack down on King Caesar at the guy's get out of the gate debut (after a theatrical musical entrance and everything)
He kicks the crap out of both Godzilla and Caesar at the same time until Godzilla goes all Hulk Hogan/John Cena and beats him in like 2 moves.

Just saying.

Who do you think is Godzilla's most formidable foe?

This is a tough one for me. We've got Hedorah, the original Showa Mechagodzilla, Super Mechagodzilla, and Destoroyah, all of which could have killed Godzilla if it weren't for help from some other major force. Both Showa and Heisei Ghidorah weren't too bad either.

But I'll go with Super Mechagodzilla. It nearly killed Godzilla with sheer firepower, and likely would have succeeded if Rodan hadn't appeared.

HEISEI: Super-Mechagodzilla, Spacegodzilla, Destroyah

2000's: Still undecided.

If I had to pick one I'd say Destroyer. Went toe to toe with Godzilla in his most powerful, unstable state and gave him a run for his money.

I'll say Hedorah. Godzilla could never have defeated Hedorah on his own, and it would still be difficult even with help from another monster.

Super MG is in second place. It crippled Godzilla, which is a significant achievement.

I have to agree with Hedorah. None of Godzilla's weapons could do anything to him. If the electrodes hadn't worked, there would've been nothing Godzilla could do to stop him. Very few other Showa monsters would've been any help against Hedorah, either. Off the top of my head, the only ones that might be able to hurt him would be Mechagodzilla (which hadn't been built yet), King Ghidorah (not practical for several obvious reasons), and Megalon. If Hedorah had eventually done enough damage to get the Seatopians' attention, they might've sent Megalon to the surface to help Godzilla fight back. But by that point, Hedorah likely would've absorbed so much pollution that he'd have been Heisei-sized and invincible.

Showa Ghidorah, Showa Mechagodzilla, and the Heisei juggernauts, for all their firepower, are at least vulnerable to Godzilla's attacks. He has a theoretical chance at defeating them alone, so none of them can really compare to Hedorah.

King Ghidorah, inspite of being his arch nemesis, never really struck me as a real threat to Godzilla and friends.

Well, before we got Hedorah and Mechagodzilla, and back in the 60's when DAM was the last movie Ghidorah was really the only guy who needed two monsters to kick his ass, and he was the only space monster at the time and he was the only one at the time other then Godzilla who had an energy breath attack of at the time.

I agree they haven't really succeed in making him as badass as the alien lady said he is but he's still pretty tough. He does need two monster to repel/kill him. At least the Showa version. I think they just haven't quite managed to pull off his big badness like they wanted but he's still tough.

MechaGodzilla. In both the Showa and Heisei series, MechaGodzilla was one of the only monsters to ever get Godzilla inches from death. The only way Godzilla ever won against was because of deus ex machina, another monster, or something beyond his control. As in, there's really no way Godzilla can beat MechaGodzilla in straight up one-on-one fight. Not to mention, MechaGodzilla is just a big insult to Godzilla: Something far more powerful than in him, made in his image. I'd be pissed off too if someone made a robot-clone of me that was superior in nearly every way.

Gave him a run for his money? Hell, he tossed Godzilla around like nothing most of the fight.

Showa Series: Hedorah, easily

Heisei Series: Destoroyah or Super MechaGodzilla, both came pretty close to killing him, and would have defeated him without outside interference.

Millennium Series: Probably Kiryu

Mecha-Godzilla the 70's an 90's versions - It may not be my favorite character... but in the Original it took two monsters, an Mecha-Godzilla had Godzilla spraying blood like a sprinkler out his neck. If Godzilla hadn't turned himself into a magnetic pole or whatever he would have been screwed.

The 90's version, It crippled an then killed Godzilla, if not for Rodan giving up the rest of his life an energy Godzilla would have been permanently killed.

Hedorah who i personally don't care for is a worthy mention, since he kicked Godzilla's ass most of the entire fight... an if not for the beam's i don't think Godzilla could have stopped him

Let's look at the facts -

Not to downplay Showa MG, but that 2nd statement isn't accurate. The first skirmish between MG and Godzilla ended in a tie- a beam war that crippled both opponants. In fact one could argue that Godzilla was up and about before MG as he was seen recharging (or whatever) with lightning on a far away island before MG was repaired.

But I agree with most peoplethat the strongest monsters were (King Ghidora, Hedorah, Mecha Godzilla, Heisei Super MG, and Destoroyah).

Mechagodzilla & Hedorah.

Heisei:
Heisei Mechagodzilla, Destoroyah & Heisei King Ghidorah ( when he was under control).

Millennium Series:
Kaiser/Keizer Ghidorah ( Love or hate that film Kaiser gave him one heck of a beating. With out the Gotengo Godzilla would of lost.)

Godzilla's most formidable foe: Man.

We've been fighting since the beginning. No matter how many cities Godzilla burns, no matter how many people he crushes, Mankind has proven to be a relentless, dangerous enemy. It's true Godzilla is a giant and a force of nature. It could fairly be argued he's won more battles than he's lost; however, neither side have won the war. One word immediately springs to mind when I think about Godzilla's rivalry with humankind: escalation. The bigger Godzilla gets, the stronger our weapons become. The more powerful Godzilla becomes, so too shall our machines be.

Like many great rivalries, we've even been forced to work together to overcome a greater threat.

Godzilla is a destructive force, probably the most powerful being on Earth. But there's a reason why Mankind threatens Godzilla's existence. While it's true Godzilla threatens our existence, we are killing machines in our own right. We're smarter, we're creative, and we're legion. We're also responsible for Godzilla's atomic rebirth, so there's a reason why he lives in our shadow--not the other way around.

Mankind's the true monster here. That's what makes us the most formidable.
