I was reading a couple different topics and this suddenly came to me. What caused the Godzilla boom in America in the 90s? My thought is that it was mainly due to Sony/Tri-Star getting the rights to do an American Godzilla movie/trilogy. That happened in 1992 which the hype for it was huge and after that we get the Trendmasters toys, all the movies getting released on VHS here in America, a book series, a comic book series and many many other merchandise for us. Also we had the constant Godzilla movie marathons on TV. Godzilla was a major thing all the way up until 1998 and then after the failure of GINO thats when the hype and everything seem to die or vanish.
With LP announcing their new American Godzilla film in 2010 ever since then we have had a new major comic book series from IDW, Bandai USA has done more Godzilla toys and we now have SH MonsterArts toys too and the hype for this film has been pretty good even with the little info we have on it.
Godzilla also seemed to have a minor boom from the 60s and 70s with most of the Showa movies coming to american theaters, and a little merchandise and the Marvel comic series. And it was there in the 80s a little too
What do you guys think though? Is an American Godzilla film what caused the boom all through the 90s? With the LP Godzilla are we bound for a second hopefully more permanant boom should the movie succeed?
