For casual collectors, the Showa series compilation from GNP Crescendo is a good place to start. The disc covers, in some form, nearly all of the Showa series Godzilla films, minus Ebirah, Horror of the Deep (1966) and including one track from Mothra (1961). Of course, any compilation as wide reaching as this will have trouble covering its bases. GNP does a nice job with the selections, although some of the missing cues like "Godzilla vs. the Tank Squad" from Mothra vs. Godzilla (1964) or the Kamacuras theme are sure to displease a few. There are some other justified complaints to be had about this release too, like the heavy use of sound effect cues in between themes or the manner in which the music on one track leads directly in the next with hardly any seconds of silence; consequently, making a lot of the cues here inappropriate for using them outside of the disc for things like iPods, for example. Still for around $14, and being rather easy to locate, the disc will still find a target audience for those not willing to pursue the pricier imports. The disc rounds itself out with a remix of Akira Ifukube's Godzilla theme done by Neil Norman.
